A close confidant of Florida Rep. Matt Gates struck a deal with federal prosecutors to greatly reduce his case and plans to assist investigators with their multilateral investigation of sexual crimes. Joel Greenberg, a former tax commissioner for Seminole County, Florida, faced decades in prison on 33 federal charges that varied between identity theft and sexual trafficking of a minor, and of course allegations of fraud and bribery. He now plans to plead guilty to six federal charges, after striking a deal with prosecutors, including one for child sex trafficking, according to a new court report.
On Thursday, federal court in Orlando revealed that Greenberg was planning to plead guilty next week, but details were initially unknown. Federal investigators are still examining whether Gates violated federal sex trafficking, prostitution and public corruption laws and whether he had sex with a minor. Gates has not been charged and he denies any of these crimes. The congressman did not mention in 86 pages of documents the plea deal released on Friday. Previously, CNN reported that Greenberg was providing information to investigators about how he and Gates met women who were given money or gifts in exchange for sex. The plaintiffs allude to others with whom Greenberg has been in contact.
As part of the plea of guilt, Greenberg intends to plead before the court that he introduced a child "to other adult men, having commercial sex with a minor in Central Florida," according to the document filed Friday. After his arrest, Greenberg also called the victim "directly and via a friend of the minor" to encourage him to lie, the document said. This story has been updated with details from the plea agreement.
